PREBIOTICS

THE PREBIOTIC FIBRE TRIAD:

• FRUIT OLIGOSACCHARIDES (FOS)
• INULIN
• MANNAN OLIGOSACCHARIDE (MOS) from brewer's yeast
• FOS, MOS and INULIN are dietary fibres, i.e. indigestible carbohydrates, which are of undisputed importance in human and animal nutrition.
• Chemically speaking, FOS and inulin are fructans (carbohydrates consisting of the repetition of fructose units) with a short chain (FOS) and a slightly longer chain (INULIN), which are particularly common in foods such as chicory and Jerusalem artichokes.
• MOS are always dietary fibres, but consist of mannose repeats and come mainly from the walls of yeasts.

Information on ingredients:

Carob flour: The carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua L.) is an evergreen tree from the legume family that grows in the dry and semi-dry regions of the Mediterranean. Despite its high sugar content, the carob bean is rich in insoluble fibre and micro-constituents such as phenolic compounds, inositols (mainly d-pinitol) and vitamins (Aristea Gioxari 1, 2022).

YANG®: It is a mixture of inactivated yeasts, in particular Saccharomyces cerevisiae (commonly known as brewer's yeast) and Cyberlindnera jadinii.

Yeasts are unicellular eukaryotic organisms that belong to the kingdom of fungi.
Brewer's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) in particular is used in animal nutrition due to its high nutrient content. It is rich in valuable macronutrients such as proteins, but also in trace elements such as selenium and chromium, group B vitamins and many other health-promoting substances.
These effects are mainly due to the richness of these nutrients.
Cyberlindnera jadinii is also a yeast that is widely used for its nutritional content, as it is also rich in proteins and vitamins.

 PETMOD® NUCLEOTIDES FROM BREWER'S YEAST

Nucleotides are the repeating units that make up nucleic acids (DNA and RNA).
They consist of three components: a nitrogenous base (purine or pyrimidine), a sugar with 5 carbon atoms, which together with the nitrogenous base forms the nucleoside, and one or more phosphate groups.
Some studies carried out on fish have shown that the intake of nucleotides has a positive effect on intestinal activity and promotes the growth and development of fish. (Dr Toshimasa Tsujinaka, 1999)
For this reason, the demand for the use of nucleotides in pet food is increasing, with the aim of contributing to normal immune function and intestinal health even in small pets. (Natalia Russo1, Nucleotides in pet food: effect of heat treatment, 2019).

 BANANA FLOUR

The banana is a very popular fruit on the world market and is consumed as a staple food in many countries. It is eaten raw or processed and is also used as a functional ingredient in various foods. Bananas contain various bioactive compounds such as phenols, carotenoids, biogenic amines and phytosterols, which have many positive effects on health and well-being. Many of these compounds have an antioxidant effect by protecting the body from oxidative stress. (Balwinder Singh a, 2015)
Some studies have shown that the polyphenolic component, especially the flavonoids, play a positive role at the level of the stomach in addition to the antioxidant effect.

What are probiotics? In the feed sector, they are so-called zootechnical additives that stabilise the intestinal flora, i.e. microorganisms that, when administered to animals, have a positive effect on their intestinal flora; (Europeo, 2003) they are in fact able to colonise the host animal's intestine and give it a positive effect. 
The adhesion of the probiotic microorganism to the host's intestinal mucosa is considered a crucial step for colonisation and further interaction with the host's epithelium and its immune system. (Mohsen Hanifeh, 2021). Indeed, both pathogenic and commensal microorganisms express different adhesin molecules on their surface that enable them to bind to different surfaces of the host. When selecting strains of probiotic microorganisms, care must therefore be taken to ensure that they have a high ability to bind to the intestine.

Some studies have shown that this ability is related to host specificity; therefore, for effective use as a probiotic, the bacterial species should originate from the host's gut, and Enterococcus faecium DSM 10663/NCIMB 10415, used in the LactoAdapt product, has this property.

Probiotics can improve mucosal health through various mechanisms, including production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), antimicrobial substances, modulation of the immune response, competitive exclusion of pathogenic bacteria by disrupting their adhesion to the intestinal mucosa and improvement of epithelial barrier functions.

The inactivated microorganisms, also known as "tyndallised", are subjected to a special thermal treatment that "inactivates" them, rendering them unable to multiply and metabolise. Their activity therefore does not consist in the ability to produce new offspring and thus to colonise the intestine, but in forming a "base" on which a suitable substrate for the recolonisation of the symbiotic flora is restored in the intestine
